About Swimming Lessons

On this page

We believe that learning to swim and water safety is a vital life skill. It gives you access to a lifetime of water activities. Our motto is I SWIM SO I CAN.

GELSS guardian supervision rules

Our student's safety is the most important part of our swim school.

To make sure everyone is safe in and out of the water we ask for parents and guardians to follow these rules:

  • Students aged five to 10 and under must be checked into lessons by a parent or guardian (over the age of 16)
  • Students aged five to 10 and under must be collected (from their GEL Swim School instructor's class) by a parent or guardian at the end of every lesson.
  • Children under the age of five who swim before and/or after their lessons must be accompanied in the water and be within arms reach, by a parent or guardian over the age of 16.
  • Children under the age of 10 must be actively supervised by a parent/guardian at all times within the centre and while in the water.
  • GEL follows Watch Around Water guidelines, which outline requirements for child supervision in an aquatic environment.

Please help support this policy and visit Life Saving Victoria website for more information about water safety

How do suspension weeks work? What is the difference between voluntary and non lesson period suspension?

Voluntary Suspension

All Swim School members are welcome to use up to 4 weeks of voluntary suspension each calendar year.

  • Suspensions are applied in 7‑day blocks.
For example: If your child is away from a Saturday class, their membership and aquatic access will be paused from that Saturday for one full week.
  • To request a voluntary suspension, we kindly ask that the request be made in writing by the member or their legal guardian.
  • Requests can be submitted using the suspension form available on our website.
  • Please note that suspensions cannot be backdated, so we encourage you to submit requests as early as possible.

Each Swim School membership includes 4 weeks of non‑voluntary suspension per calendar year. These occur during our scheduled lesson breaks, such as Christmas and Easter, which are outlined in the published Swim School calendar.

During these breaks, no lessons are held, but members are very welcome to continue enjoying full access to the facility as part of their active membership.

If you prefer not to use the facility during these periods, you are welcome to submit a suspension request using the suspension form available on our website.

Please note:

  • Suspensions can only be applied in multiples of seven (7) consecutive days.
  • Backdated or retrospective suspensions cannot be approved, so we encourage submitting requests in advance.

How long before the lesson do I need to submit the suspension form?

You are welcome to submit a suspension form any time before your scheduled class, including on the day of the lesson.

Do you offer a waitlist for Swim School classes?

At this stage, we do not offer a waitlist for Swim School classes.

If you would like assistance finding an alternative class or time, our Swim School team on the pool deck or our reception staff will be more than happy to help.

Do we provide make up classes?

We do not currently provide make up classes. If you have not yet used your 4-week voluntary suspension, we encourage you to do so to avoid being charged for lessons you cannot attend.

Is a booking required for a swim assessment? Who needs to be assessed?

We recommend that all new students over the age of 3 complete a swim assessment before enrolling into our swimming lessons. This helps ensure they are placed in the level that best matches their current skills and supports their learning.

You are not required to book a swim assessment. You may attend GESAC during the following times:

  • Weekdays: 9:00am – 1:00pm and 4:00pm – 7:00pm
  • Weekends: 9:00am – 1:00pm

If you prefer to visit Carnegie Memorial Pool, assessments are available at:

  • Weekdays: 9:00am – 12:00pm and 4:00pm – 7:00pm
  • Weekends: 8:30am – 12:30pm

Please note that if a child is under 5 years old, a parent or guardian may be required to enter the water during the assessment.

I need to suspend my child’s membership for medical reasons. How can I do this?

If you need to suspend your child’s swim school membership for medical reasons—such as an extended illness or injury, without cancelling the membership, you may be eligible for a medical credit.

Medical credits can be applied when your child misses a minimum of two and a maximum of eight consecutive lessons. Upon receiving a medical certificate that confirms the dates of non‑attendance, we can apply a 50% credit for the total number of missed weeks to your child’s membership.
