Phone-Free Wellness

Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent vote on creating a phone-free wellness space at Glen Eira Leisure. Your feedback helps us improve our facilities and ensure we deliver a smooth and positive experience.

We’re excited to announce that the majority of you voted in favour of trialling a phone-free wellness initiative at both of our aquatic centres.

Benefits of having a phone-free wellness area

  • Enhances relaxation and serenity: Creates a distraction-free environment where you can truly unwind. Limiting your screen time plays an important role in mental recovery and relaxation.
  • Protects your device from potential damage: Exposure to heat, steam, and moisture in wellness areas like saunas and steam rooms can easily harm phones, leading to overheating or malfunctioning.
  • Protects your privacy: Whilst filming and photography is not allowed in the wellness area, this will help ensure the policy is followed. This helps foster a respectful environment where you can fully relax with no concerns.

Trial Period Details

Start Date: Monday, 15 September 2025

Duration: 3 months

Location:  Spa, sauna, steam room and infrared sauna at both GESAC and Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool

During this trial, we kindly ask all members and guests to refrain from using mobile phones in the designated wellness area.

Results Overview

This decision was guided by strong community support and thoughtful feedback. Here are the key themes that emerged from your responses:

  • Privacy : Strong concerns about filming, photos, and feeling exposed in swimwear.
  • Relaxation : Desire for peace, quiet, and a distraction-free environment.
  • Device Damage: Worries about phones overheating or malfunctioning in wet/hot areas.

Please note:

  • We understand that some people may need to remain contactable for important reasons. You're welcome to keep your phone with you, but we kindly ask that it stays out of sight while you're in these allocated spaces.
  • Mobile phones may still be used in other parts of the wellness area, excluding the spa, saunas, and steam room.
  • You are welcome to bring non-filming devices such as headphones, e-readers (e.g. Kindle), or similar items to support your relaxation. The restriction specifically targets filming and photography, which is why mobile phones are being limited in these spaces.

The goal is to foster a more peaceful, mindful, and respectful environment for everyone.

Disclaimer: We highly recommend not keeping your phone on you while in these areas (e.g. in pockets), as exposure to heat and steam can cause your device to overheat or malfunction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include the entire wellness area?

No, the phone-free guideline applies specifically to the spa, sauna, steam room, and infrared sauna at both GESAC and Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool. It does not include the surrounding pool deck or general wellness area outside of these spaces. These specific areas were selected due to the high volume of feedback about privacy concerns, filming, and the need for a more relaxing environment.

Does this mean I can no longer wear headphones or listen to music in these spaces?

You’re welcome to bring non-filming devices such as headphones, e-readers (e.g. Kindle), or similar items to support your relaxation. The restrictions specifically target filming and photography, which is why we ask mobile phones are out of site in these spaces.

Why is this trial happening?

We received an overwhelming amount of feedback from members and guests about phone use in these wellness areas, especially around privacy and filming concerns. In response, we ran a vote, and the majority supported trialling a phone-free initiative.

Are any other areas going to be phone-free?

Not at this stage. We’ve focused on the spa, sauna, steam room, and infrared sauna due to the high volume of feedback about privacy and relaxation in these spaces. We’ll continue to review feedback and the results of the trial before making any further decisions.
