Activate Program for Older Adults

Whether you are returning from an operation, shoulders, hips, and knees, dealing with that wretched arthritis, or osteoporosis, or coming to us for the very first time, we have a class to suit everyone with our Activate Program including Circuit and Strength classes with a focus on increasing strength, mobility, flexibility and balance as well as our Aqua fitness program.

Hi! Tam here, one of the Activate Trainers at GESAC and Caulfield Recreation Centre. At Glen Eira Leisure (GEL) we pride ourselves on offering a variety of classes that are suitable to older adults.

We are aware of those cranky rumbles and grumbles that start to creep in your body but at Glen Eira Leisure we are here to support you so you can keep moving and enjoying life doing all the activities that you have loved over the years.

Whether you are returning from an operation, shoulders, hips, and knees, dealing with that wretched arthritis, or osteoporosis, or coming to us for the very first time, we have a class to suit everyone with our Activate Program including Circuit and Strength classes with a focus on increasing strength, mobility, flexibility and balance.

In my classes in particular I have a couple of rules (don’t worry they aren’t scary)

  1. Listen to your body – you know your body better than anybody else, if something doesn’t feel good, make that movement smaller, if it still doesn’t feel good we will look for an alternative movement that your body is happy with.
  2. It’s ok to sit down and catch your breath if you need to.
  3. Have fun!

Those returning from recent surgery or rehabilitation may also benefit from taking part in water-based activity such as our Aqua classes.

GESAC offer a wonderful range of Aqua classes to suit all fitness levels and abilities with classes in our 25m pool every morning from Monday until Saturday. These classes are a mix of aerobic training and strength work designed to increase cardiovascular fitness and overall muscle strength.

We also conduct classes in our Wellness pool and a water temperature of 32-34 degrees makes this pool a great option for those with osteo arthritis, mobility challenges a more suitable choice for aqua exercise. Tuesday and Thursday mornings, we also have Aqua Pilates also in the Wellness pool. This class combines Pilates techniques with Aqua movement and is a great option for those who are unable to do mat-based Pilates.

We’d love you to try one of our Aqua classes – just always let the instructor know if it’s your first time and they will ensure you are well looked after.

Another amazing aspect of joining in with the Activate classes is that we are a very social bunch.  We often have coffee catch ups after class as having a group of others to relate to is important no matter your age; we have outstanding facility and have so much to offer you.

Visit our reception area if you would love to join in on any of our Activate classes and our friendly staff can help you to get started.
